Built for remote work

Life on the Road: A Bookkeeper Built for Remote Work

A different way to work

Does this work have to happen from one place?

It started with a question we kept coming back to: does this work have to happen from one place?

For a long time, the answer was yes — or at least, that's how everyone else did it. Bookkeepers sat in offices. Clients drove to them. The relationship was built around a folder being handed across a desk.

So we rebuilt it the other way around.

Today, Thank Heavens Bookkeeping runs from wherever we happen to be. For several months of the year, that's the road — the whole family, a fifth wheel, and a bookkeeping practice that doesn't skip a beat. In late May we come back to Hanover, PA for the summer, and the work looks exactly the same there as it does from a campground in another state.

The client experience

What that means if you're a client

Nothing about how your books get done changes.

Records come in the same way. Reconciliations happen on the same schedule. Payroll runs on the same dates. Your monthly statements land when they always have. Job costing gets reviewed the same way it always was, with the same person on the other end of it.

The only thing that's different is where that person happens to be sitting.

If you were worried that a mobile bookkeeper is a distracted one, that's the fair question to ask. It's also the reason we run on systems instead of on proximity. Nothing in this practice depends on someone being reachable in the same time zone as your shop, because nothing in it ever really did.

Still rooted here

Hanover is still home

We're rooted in Hanover, and that doesn't change because the office has wheels. We serve Hanover-area contractors the same way we always have. We come back every summer. The local relationships we've built are the reason we can do this at all — they're what made a practice like this possible.

What's different is that we're not limited to it anymore.

A focused specialty

Who this works for

Contractors and trades businesses. Builders, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, landscaping. The ones whose books are full of job costs and subcontractors and equipment that has to be tracked properly. Businesses that need someone who understands retainage and 1099s and seasonal cash flow — and who'd rather work with a specialist than whoever happens to be closest.

If that's you, and you've been putting off getting your books into shape because the firms near you don't do what you need, you're the reason this practice looks the way it does.

The return on the model

What it buys us

Time with our family. That's the honest answer.

It's also the reason we can give your books the attention they need without burning out doing it. A practice built to fit around a life is one that doesn't have to cut corners when things get busy.

We'd rather be the bookkeeper who actually looks at your file than the one who's simply down the street.
